Celebrating 50 Years of Legal Service in Pakenham
How Duffy & Simon Began in 1976
From a bold decision in 1976 to a cornerstone of the Pakenham community, Duffy & Simon Law Firm marks half a century of legal service. With a vision for a more fulfilling and balanced way of practicing law, founder, Donald Duffy set out to create a firm that prioritised well-being alongside legal excellence. With a love for the countryside heavily influencing the location, Don decided to establish the firm in what was once a small town, Pakenham.
As the business began to thrive, an exciting opportunity emerged to collaborate with Barry Simon. Barry was in the midst of selling his firm in Berwick, thus, leading to the formation of the name Duffy & Simon.
However, it soon became apparent that Barry's commitments in federal politics restricted his participation in the business. After a brief period, Don decided to buy Barry out, but the name Duffy & Simon remained.
The Partners Who Shaped the Firm
In 1978, Edwin Hume joined the firm, and alongside Don played a significant role in the growth of the firm and in actively contributing to the community. Their involvement with various local organisations, such as kindergartens and the agricultural society, as well as serving on boards like Pakenham Hospital, Outlook, the Racing Club, and the Cemetery Trust, has not only benefited these groups but has also helped the firm establish strong connections within the community. Furthermore, their initiative to become a one-stop shop by obtaining a tax license when there were no accountants in town showcases their commitment to meeting the needs of their clients.
As the years went by, five additional lawyers who would go on to become partners joining Don and Eddie in leading the practice, each contributing their unique expertise: Sandy Keysers in 2005, followed by Andrew Penton and Damien McKenna in 2009, Matthew Abraham in 2014, and Adam Cattach in 2016. This transition solidified the next generation of leadership within the firm.
A Workplace Built on Loyalty and Care
Few things speak to the character of a firm quite like the longevity of its staff. In 2024, Duffy & Simon celebrated Patsy Campbell's remarkable 40 years with the firm. The following year brought two more milestones: 25 years for Tammy Preen and 30 years for Debbie Cribbes. With an average tenure of 10 years, this showcases a workplace culture rooted in loyalty, respect, and genuine care for its team members.
Looking Ahead After 50 Years
Fifty years on, the firm Don Duffy built from nothing continues to be guided by the same principles that inspired it: strong community involvement, timely and reliable service for clients, and a reputation built on trust across Pakenham and surrounding suburbs, from gippsland to Melbourne CBD and beyond.
